LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – In an effort to prevent flash flooding in some neighborhoods during heavy rains, new gardens are in the process of being installed.
Besides being green, the rain gardens help store and filter water during heavy rains. The first one was unveiled Wednesday in Germantown.
The Louisville Metro Council worked with MSD to find these systems, which are capable of processing 29,000 gallons of water and diverting more than one million gallons of storm water from the sewer system. MSD has approved 75 to 80 other gardens that cost $12,000 to $150,000 each.
The EPA has rain gardens in other major cities as well.
