LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - People were forced out of their homes Tuesday after a shooting led to a SWAT situation.

The incident began around 10 a.m. on Cedar Court in the Beecher Terrace apartment complex.

Police said a man in his 20s was shot in the leg. He was taken to University Hospital. Police said he was expected to survive. Officers gave the man first aid. They were patrolling the area when they got word of the shooting.

Witnesses said the person who may have done the shooting ran into an apartment. Before officers could go inside, they had to clear out an entire building, including several elderly residents.

"It's sad. A lot of people don't think about elderly people or other people," said neighbor Greg Doughtery. "They just seem to think about themselves and what they can get out of the situation, I guess, right then and there."

After about two hours, police tried to send in their robot. When they realized that would not work, they went in themselves. The person they wanted was not there, but Louisville Metro Police Officer Cary Klain said, "There is a search warrant for that apartment, and items that may have been related to the incident is what they'll be looking for." Klain said police hope the evidence they gather inside the apartment will help when they finally catch the person who fired the shots.

Police said they do not have a description of the suspect.

Anyone with information about the crime should call the Louisville Metro Police Department's anonymous tip line at (502) 574-LMPD.
