Kenwood Montessori School | Education
About Us
Kenwood Montessori located at 224 Woodbine Street, in Louisville, Kentucky, is a private, nondenominational, nonprofit organization. We follow the philosophy of Dr. Maria Montessori in supporting the development of each young child and his or her natural desire to learn. We are governed by a board of directors that includes parent representatives.
Our school is open to all and welcomes children of every race, creed, and nationality. A bi-lingual environment and instruction are provided in both classrooms by an English-speaking teacher and a Spanish-speaking teacher.
Additional Information
Our program is designed for two-to-six year olds. Each classroom environment is thoughtfully and carefully prepared so that children can share the space in a safe and productive way. The three-to-five year old room is always attended by four adults - two certified Montessori teachers, and two assistants. The two’s have a lead teacher with an assistant, and no more than eight students.
Discipline at the school is supportive, not punitive. Besides safety concerns, our rules say only that we are to respect each other and respect the materials. Misbehavior is treated as a mistake, and children - supported by appropriate words and actions modeled by adults - are encouraged to try again.
The teacher’s role in the classroom is to facilitate a child’s development process. Observation notes are compiled and every child’s development is assessed and discussed with parents at two conferences each year.
A bi-lingual environment and instruction are provided in both classrooms. We are excited to continue our collaboration with La Casita Center, a non-profit organization that provides educational and family services to Hispanic/Latino families. Both classrooms are staffed by an English-speaking teacher and a Spanish-speaking teacher.
