Central High School's pool refurbished and open

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – The grand opening was held Thursday for the newly refurbished Aquatic Center at Central High School.

Dr. Daniel Withers, Central High School principal, and some swimmers from the Central team swam the first lap in the new pool during the ceremony.

The original pool was built in 1972 but closed in the early 2000s. Soon after it was closed, city leaders and the community worked to renovate and reopen the pool.

"I feel excited," said Brionna Thompson, a senior on the Central swim team." A little disappointed because it's my last year here, but it feels really good. I'm excited."

While the pool is on Central High's campus, it is intended for the community.

"This is not a Central High School pool only," said Withers. "This pool is for Jefferson County. Many other schools will be occupying the pool during the day and the afternoon. Also it will be for people in the community."
